Bronze is an alloy of copper and other trace materials such as tin.
Bronze sculptures take very little maintenance. They will just need to be waxed once or twice a year when the bronze is warm as it will soak into the bronze and create a barrier to prevent oxidation (patina). Leave the wax on for around 10 minutes and then buff it off using a soft cloth. This will preserve the bronze and keep a good shine until the following year. We recommend Kiwi shoe polish.
Bronze sculptures are ideal and meant to be enjoyed in an outdoor environment. Providing that the pieces are maintained correctly, their original appearance can be enjoyed.
The green discolouration that you may see on your bronze is called Patina. This is where the bronze has come into contact with water and oxidised to form a green layer on the surface. To remove this, dampen a cloth in warm soapy water and use something like an old toothbrush to gently scrub off.
Bronze is one of the most durable materials and will last indefinitely. Do not wash the bronze with anything that contains chlorides as this could result in ‘Bronze disease’.
Some of the sculptures have anchor points molded in to allow these to be bolted to the ground. If the sculpture that you have ordered doesn’t have these then we would strongly suggest cementing the sculpture to the ground. Please note that sculptures can weigh up to 250 kilos.
